Usagi Yojimbo Color Special # 3

Writer/Artist: Stan Sakai
Colorist: Tom Luth
Publisher: Fantagraphics
Published: September 1992

This issue has Usagi being deceived by a sly fox and Tomoe forced to hand out some samurai justice. The second tale has Usagi in space, kicking ass.

I used to have a Usagi toy as a kid and it rocked I would load up weapons on him and he made the ninja turtles jealous, as only a hare can do to a turtle. Too bad for him there are four of them to the one of him.

Hey I'm kinda liking these 90 second reviews. Gets shit done!

Ghostbusters # 1: The Other Side

Writer: Keith Champagne
Artist: Tom Nguyen
Publisher: IDW

Published: October 2008

When the Ghost Mob has dire plans for you and the ones you love, "Who you gonna call?"

GHOSTBUSTERS!

That's right! The Ghostbusters are back! In comix form no less! This issue has our boys back in business, but instead of tackling the typical monster ghost and ghouls, they're running head first into the ghost mob! No sliming here! We're talking made men, who don't take shit, armed with real guns!

The issue has Venkman becoming possessed and his spirit forced out of his body. The remaining Ghostbusters are charged with finding his soul, lest he be lost forever. Meanwhile, the ghost mob is making plans to put the Ghostbusters out of business, ie. swimming with the fisheys. And those real guns are certainly going to help.

Check Winston hand out some blue collar justice to the possessed Venkman:

"I LOVE THIS TOWN"

Oh, also check the ad for Rick Remender and Bret Blevins Legion of the Supernatural. It was supposed to be out by now, but due to some unforeseen events it's going to be delayed. I emailed IDW about this and they were kind enough to send me some scans of the first few pages, and let me tell you it looks great. When it does hit, it's gonna be awesome.

Things From Nowhere

Writer/Artist: Richard Kolkman
Publisher: Xulu Comics
Published: 2002

I'd never heard of Richard Kolkman, but after reading Things From Nowhere, I kinda wish I had earlier. He has a unique sense of humor. He blends pop culture with his own slanted view on reality. Take a look:

Red Sonja # 2

Writer: Bruce Jones
Artist: Frank Thorne
Publisher: Marvel
Published: January 1976

Ladies Night!

Every Monday I'll post a comic that features a lady, and to kick things off, the one and only Red Sonja.

Red Sonja made a vow that she would never submit to any man who could not best her in fair combat. Issue # 2 has Red Sonja being tracked by a merciless killer who will stop at nothing to retrieve an item she possesses.
The tracker has killed anyone she has come into contact with and poisoned the water streams, forcing Red Sonja to near death. As she lays beside her dead horse, dehydrated and defeated, the tracker stalks forth and is about to deal the final stroke. Is this the end of Red Sonja?

Nope! 'Cause it's Ladies Night. And the feeling's right! Oh yes it's ladies night! Oh what a night (oh what a night)!

Gumby's Summer Fun Special

Writer: Bob Burden
Artist: Art Adams
Publisher: Comico
Published: July 1987

Gumby's Summer Fun Adventure is just that: Gumby and Pokey have a series of adventures. This issue is like the goulash of comics. It's got Halloween monsters, popped-eyed aliens, robots, a werewolf, pirates, space bears, and one really depressed suicidal couch potato (he's my favorite).

To the best of my recollection, I don't know if I watched Gumby as a child, but if this comic is any indication of the type of genres Gumby ventured into, I'm saddened by the joy's I may have missed. The issue follows Gumby and Pokey as they play with some robot kids, are attacked by aliens and a werewolf, go to Halloween town, and Gumby becomes a pirate captain. As I mentioned the best is when they visit Wooster, who has tied strings to his lightening rod, because he has given up on life. Also Pokey gets drunk.

This is when childhood ends.

Superior Showcase: # 1

Writers/Artists: Nick Bertozzi, Mike Dawson, Dean Trippe
Publisher: Ad House Books
Published: 2006

Ad House is the boss of odd comics. Take Superior Showcase # 1. Three tales of maximum kookiness. The first tale, Super Mart is a mix of Clerks meets superheroes. The second Ace-Face has a superhero turned high school teacher forced out of retirement. Finally the last, Butterfly, has involves fighting ghosts and stuff.

I've been pretty impressed with AdHouse's selection of titles. They seemed to have found a nice niche in the comic world by focusing on weird, quirky, and accessible reads. The artwork is cool too. Take for instance the cover alone. Pretty cool right? That's right, it is. Deal with it.

Batman Gotham Knights # 3

Batman Gotham KnightsWriters: Paul Pope, Devin Grayson
Artists: Paul Ryan, Paul Pope
Publisher: DC
Published: May 2000

Chock this one up to laziness again. I had some more pre-scans of Pope's stuff. You know, when it comes to Batsy, Pope definitely has a handle on that guy. Year 100 is fantastic, and any other short story he has done is usually top notch as well.

Ok, Gotham Knights 3 has Batman battling it out with undead and Popes tale has Batman battling a guy in a giant robot suit, all the while suffering the indiginity of a broken nose. These black and white tales are the stories that compose the Batman Black and White Volumes. They're pretty sweet.

Spider-Man Fairy Tales # 1

Writers: C.B. Cebulski, David Sexton
Artist: Ricardo Tercio
Publisher: Marvel
Published: May 2007

Holy hell did I ever some nightmares about spiders the other night. Fuck I hate spiders...creepiest little things ever...anyway, speaking of spiders, here's another of Spidey's fairy tale issues. This one is pretty cool. It's *ahem* a spin on Red Riding Hood starring Mary Jane. The issue sticks pretty true to the original tale, less the eating of grandma or Mary Jane by the wolf...well, I guess it doesn't stick that close after all..but like the tale's evolution over the years, this one just evolved to fit - THE APPROVED COMIC CODE!!!

Spider-Man's Tangled Web # 15

Writer/Artist: Paul Pope
Publisher: Marvel
Published: August 2002

Yet again, another Paul Pope comic finds its way onto COMIX 3 6 5! No, folks this isn't bordering on obsession,..well maybe a little, but trust me, partly the reason is because I'm right tired and I have some of his comics pre-scanned from an earlier post. But the rest is obsession.

Tangled Web 15 has Spidey only appearing for about 4 or 5 pages, with the rest about a daughter finding out her dad is not the man she thought he was. As always the art looks great.

Solo # 3: Paul Pope

Writers: Paul Pope
Artist: Paul Pope
Colorist: Jose Villarrubia, Dave Stewart
Publisher: DC
Published: April 2005

I know: sick. Another Pope comic today.

This is another standout issue from the Solo series from DC. Pope kicks ass on this one, and in my mind it is on par with Cooke, Sale, and Scott's Solo issues.

The first tale is Popes interpretation of the Minotaur of Knossos, the second an AWESOME tribute to Kirby's OMAC. The third and fourth tale are nice tales of urban life and past memories. Finally, the last tale is a great story involving Robin, Bat's, and the Joker.

I really dug Pope's version of Joker. He reminds me of a sickened Cesar Romero (mostly because of the mustachio stubble). Check some scans and know that this is a must have issue for any serious comic collector.

Look familiar?
